Review: Logic of English Foundations B
I had the pleasure of listening to Denise Eide speak at a homeschool convention last year, and I was so impressed by her knowledge and experience in teaching kids to read, and to read well. Literacy is a HUGE issue in our nation, despite the enormous amount of funding dedicated to helping kids learn to read. I purchased Logic of English‘s Foundation Level A materials last year for Sweetheart, and am thrilled that they sent me Foundations Level B to review! Logic of English was super generous and sent us the Foundations B Teachers Manual, Manuscript workbook, and Readers, as well as their Phonogram & Spelling Rule Quick Reference Guide, Spelling Analysis Card, and the Phonogram Game Tiles.
Logic of English‘s materials are designed to be multi-sensory and lots of fun! Ms. Eide includes lots of games that all my kids have fun playing, no matter who is officially completing the lesson! Bingo with chocolate chips? Yes, please!
Each lesson includes Phonemic Awareness, Phonograms, Handwriting, Spelling, and Reading. The lessons are quite thorough, and sometimes, I split one lesson up over 2 days. In the Phonemic Awareness section, the kids learn new skills like creating new words by changing the first sound, blending sounds, and making plurals.
In the Phonogram section, they learn a new phonogram like “ee” or “oy oi”. The kids also learn the reasons behind the different phonograms. For example, /oi/ and /oy/ both make the sound /oi/ but only one can be used at the end of a word. Which phonogram is that? /oy/ Hence, we spell toy with an /oy/. Very logical and the kids eat it up! You can see the light bulbs coming on in their cute little heads.
In the Handwriting section, the kids practice writing, of course, in either manuscript or cursive. Select the type of workbook you’d like, depending on your writing style preference.
In the Spelling section, the kids learn spelling rules, usually based on the phonograms introduced that day.
The Reading section highly utilizes the workbook and the readers. Sweetheart loves these materials – they are in full color and quite appealing to her. Logic of English also introduces High Frequency Words, to help familiarize kids with words they will see a lot. 300 High Frequency Words make up 65% of all that we read and write!
Logic of English is super committed to our success as homeschool parents and teachers. To that end, they offer an entire day of FREE online training, accessible anytime here –> Teacher Training Course Video. Do I think you can teach LOE without completing the full training? Yes! Is the training really helpful? Yes! Do what you can. 🙂
Denise Eide also has a wonderful book called Uncovering the Logic of English. It’s a fascinating read and will really help you understand LOE.
Logic of English has also produced an app and a book for kids called Doodling Dragons. They have one more app called Phonics with Phonograms to help kids practice those phonograms!
