• Review: The Nutcracker ~ Stories in Music

Maestro Classics offered us the opportunity to review their cd and activity book, The Nutcracker.  They sent us the cd in a nice case and an activity book.  This would make a great Christmas gift for a family! Have you ever heard Jim Weiss tell a story?  If not, stop reading this, grab your kiddos, and listen to this story! We are huge fans of his, and own several of his recordings.  He makes the stories come alive!   I was excited to see that he was the narrator for The Nutcracker.  He also wrote the script himself. I loved the idea of having a script to go along with…

  • Review: The Ultimate Homeschool Planner

Apologia Educational Ministries has another winner!  I reviewed their Exploring Creation Field Trip Journal earlier this year, so I had high expectations for this homeschool planner.   Apologia sent me not just a homeschool planner, but The Ultimate Homeschool Planner.  And, yes, it has lived up to its name. I’m a rather techy girl, so a lot of my life revolves around being online.  I’ve tried a variety of online resources for planners, and I’ve recently found myself coming back to pen and paper.  I would miss an appointment, or finding an appointment in my digital planner on the wrong date, minor things like that.  #hideseyes   I picked up…

  • Review: The Phonetic Zoo: A Self-Teaching Spelling Program

I’ll admit, I’m a bit of an Institute for Excellence in Writing groupie.   I heard the founder, Andrew Pudewa, teach at a homeschool convention I attended last spring, and I went to every lecture he gave.   When we were offered the opportunity to review the Phonetic Zoo, I jumped at it.  Actually, I begged.  Pretty please, with sugar on top, let me review this product!   The kind folks over at The Old Schoolhouse agreed, and pretty soon this fabulous product arrived at my mailbox.  We’ve spent the last couple of months using this program: Institute For Excellence in Writing’s The Phonetic Zoo A Self-Teaching Spelling Program Level…

  • Review: Living Waters: Intelligent Design in the Oceans of the Earth DVD

I am not a big movie watcher, mostly because I have a terrible time sitting still that long!    I recently had the opportunity to review a movie from FishFlix.com called Living Waters: Intelligent Design in the Oceans of the Earth and ya’ll…. it is brilliant.  Just brilliant.  This is the third film in their documentary collection, The Design of Life. As a family, we LOVE watching nature shows that show the expanse of the world – up to the tops of mountains and into the depths of the oceans.  So many of them are not from a creationism perspective though.  While we normally just overlook the evolution parts, and…

  • Review: Progeny Press Study Guide for Sam the Minuteman

Progeny Press offered us the opportunity to use and review an ebook study guide for Sam the Minuteman.  Progeny Press has a variety of study guides, to help you dig into literature and interact it with it more as you read, from a Christian perspective.  They offer guides for Lower Elementary (K – 3rd), Upper Elementary (3rd – 6th grade), Middle School, and High School.    The guides are physical books or downloadable e-books (pdf’s).  Some of ebooks are interactive. We picked up a copy of Sam the Minuteman from our local library.  This was Super D’s first time to read the story and he LOVED it!  He read it…

  • You Need This Free App!

Update 4/22/18:  I no longer recommend this app.  See followup:  Betrayal by Think Dirty App Toxins, toxins, everywhere!   I took a trip to Target this week  (without kids!!), and went to town scanning things with my new Think Dirty app.   I knew most of the cleaners and personal care products weren’t good, BUT I didn’t know they were THIS BAD!   I was HORRIFIED.   I wanted to show everyone my app, and scan what they were buying for them.  I also didn’t want to creep people out or get kicked out of the store <sic> so I refrained.   Ugh. NO WONDER America is in a health…

  • Review: Reading Kingdom

Reading skills, or the lack thereof, are reaching crisis levels in our nation.   The Dept of Education has found that 32 million adults in the U.S. can’t read. That’s 14 percent of the population. 21 percent of adults in the U.S. read below a 5th grade level, and 19 percent of high school graduates can’t read.   Interestingly enough, 70 percent of the prison population can’t read.    Reading Kingdom would like to see a drastic change in those statistics!   They recently offered us a fabulous opportunity to review their program, Reading Kingdom Online.   We were given a year’s subscription. Reading Kingdom is designed to teach kiddos between…

  • Review: Middlebury Interactive Languages: Elementary Spanish 1

Foreign Language has been one of those subjects that’s on my “list” of things I want to add but either haven’t found a good way to do it or made it a priority to research.  I was excited when I was offered the opportunity to review one semester of Middlebury Interactive Languages’ programs.   After a bit of agonizing over which language to choose, we settled on their Elementary Spanish 1, Grades 3-5. Middlebury Interactive Languages offers a variety of digital language courses including Spanish, French, German, Chinese.  For my 3rd grader, Super D, they currently offer 2 semesters of Spanish, French, and German and 1 semester of Chinese. All the…

  • Review: Two Fun Games from USAopoly!

We LOVE playing games at my house, and I’m thrilled that my kids are now getting old enough to play that will engage me as well!   We jumped at the opportunity to review two games for USAopoly, and they sent us Wonky: The Crazy Cubes Card Game and Tapple: Fast Word Fun for Everyone to play and review. The kids dived into the Tapple: Fast Word Fun for Everyone game first and were hilarious to watch!   Super D picked a category card, and tapped the timer button to start the game.  He then had 10 seconds to give an answer that matched the category, tap the Tapple letter button, and…

  • Review: Eric Liddell, Something Greater Than Gold

The YWAM series of Christian Heroes is one of my favorites.  I remember reading them when I was younger, and I am so excited to introduce them to my son!   YWAM’s Christian Heroes series has over 70 titles, and we were given the opportunity to review Eric Liddell: Something Greater Than Gold from the Christian Heroes: Then and Now Series by YWAM Publishing.   Many titles also include a Study Guide and this selection was no exception.   (Our study guide got lost in the mail, and we didn’t have time to review it for the purpose of this post. 🙁 🙁   I’ll update this when it arrives and we spend…
