• How are Essential Oils Made?

Attention do-it-yourself’ers!   When you make things, are you hoping to save money and have a better product?  (read: less chemicals)    When I got into essential oils, it didn’t take me long to go down the “I wonder if I can do this at home” path. The short answer? “Yes, I could.  But unless the zombie apocalypse has started, I won’t.” Want to know why?   I can’t do it better than Young Living!   While the overall process looks simple, it is actually SUPER complicated!  At Young Living, their employees are trained on the distillation process for 6-7 YEARS before they are released to distill on their own!…

  • Fermented Vegetables 101

Fermented Vegetables by Susan Count I thought I would have to hold my nose to eat “ugh” – fermented vegetables. Sauerkraut, I thought! Who would eat that? But somewhere I picked up that fermented vegetables could put good bacteria in my gut and help with my acid refux. WRONG! It didn’t just help – it changed EVERYTHING! And I think it helped me lose a little weight too and that never hurts. I substituted a big forkful of fermented vegetables at dinner instead of eating rice or potatoes or pasta. Cutting the Cost A quart of fermented vegetables at the store can run about $10. A cabbage, a couple carrots and…

  • Essential Oils Cases: Ideas for Portability

This has probably happened to you too.  I’ve been out and about and something happens.  A bee sting, an ant bite, an upset tummy, or worse.  And I need my oils right then! There are several different options for having your oils with you.  While you’re still building up your stash, the 5/8 dram bottles can be helpful.  You just add your oil of choice to each bottle.  My challenge has been that they leak sometimes.  This hasn’t been a widely-reported issue, so my guess is that it’s user-error. 🙂  Make sure and close your bottles well! I like this keychain case with the 5/8 dram bottles.  Personally, I love…

  • Essential Oil Display and Storage Ideas

My kitchen counter was overflowing…with essential oils.  So I started keeping some in the bathroom cupboard.  But then I was forever going back and forth between the two places, looking for the oil I needed and forgetting where it was. For Christmas, my hubby got me the perfect gift for an essential oil aficionado like me: a display rack!  I LOVE this rack because it a) looks pretty and b) holds all my oils!!!  I can find an oil when I need it without searching all over the house!  I am excited to share this pretty photo of my oil rack with you! Isn’t it pretty??   It’s actually a…

  • Bone Broth For Busy Mamas

Bone Broth For Busy Mamas Guest writer Susan Count joins us today to share about her super simple way of making a kitchen staple, bone broth!   Don’t throw that bone to the dogs! In that bone is ‘superfood – super nutrition”. Use your crockpot to make a bone broth that will nourish your cells like nothing else. Why bother? Bother because you know that farming practices have depleted the minerals in our soils so we need to be deliberate about supplying them to our body. This is especially true if we have any degenerative or auto immune diseases. Make your own broth and you won’t get the “natural flavor”- cough-cough of MSG or…

  • How Peppermint Essential Oil Saved Christmas

My Christmas Eve disaster was looming. I was curled up in bed with a cramping stomach as my companion. What to do, what to do? I mustered up the strength to twist off the cap on my bottle of peppermint oil.  Not caring that it would sting a little if I used it straight, I rubbed a few drops on my agonized  tummy. After a while, I crept to the bathroom, and sat on the oh-so-comfortable laminate floor, sniffing the bottle. Much to my relief, I started to feel… better. After another few minutes, I returned to bed, a drop of peppermint on my hand, I fell right asleep, and…

  • Husband Food – Meal Plan #2

When my husband decided to marry me, he sure didn’t pick me because of my culinary skills. So, it makes me super excited when I can put together a meal that he really enjoys.   This week, that happened not once, but TWICE. Score! Awesome and SUPER EASY Meal #1 Pulled Pork (in the crock pot!)   I LOVED how simple this was!  I made it for Sunday lunch, it’s lasted for several meals, and we still have pork left over!   Chris cut up the onions for me.  (Maybe one day I’ll post a pic of how I cut up onions.  It involves me wearing my 7 yr old…
