  • Preventing Illness – Vitamin D

Vitamin D can be one of the most powerful vitamins in our arsenal to beating the flu before it starts.   As reported by the Daily Telegraph, studies show that Vitamin D is used in a complex process that prepare our “T” cells for immune system battles.  A deficiency in Vitamin D can hinder our T cells from doing their thing. Our pediatrician recommended the following doses: When healthy – Kids: 800IU  Adults: 4000 IUs When sick – Kids: 1600IU   Adults: 8000 IUs NaturalNews reports that 40% of Americans are deficient in Vitamin D and that we cannot get enough Vitamin D from diet alone.   Exposure to the sun (without…

  • A Simple Change = Saved $$! (Frugal Friday)

Are you interested in a simple change that will help you save your $$, and produce less paper waste? Use washrags and small towels instead of paper towels. I promised it was simple. After you use them, toss the rags into your normal laundry load. Your rags don’t have to be fancy – I use prefold cloth diapers (that weren’t used on the baby) and those have worked wonderfully! You could use cut-up old t-shirts or even scraps from old bath towels. I’m thrilled to be able to save a little more of my grocery/household budget money just by skipping the paper towels. At around $6/pack, I buy about a…

  • Blueberry Scones (Tasty Tuesday)

Blueberry Scone Deliciousness I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE blueberry scones. Apparently my little guy does too.  We made a batch this morning and he devoured them.  When I asked him if we should share them, he said no!   Once I clarified that I meant the recipe and not the scones themselves, he was all for it. He’s working on learning how to share… learning to share food is something I’m still working on! These scones came out soft and delicious – no hard bricks here!  (unlike the last recipe I tried…) Blueberry Streusel Scones: 2 c all-purpose flour (Substitute your favorite type here) 1/3 c organic sugar (Substitute your favorite…

  • Making the Hard Food Choices

Choosing to eat healthy can be hard.  That’s why we call it CHOOSING. I could choose to eat the junk food I used to love, or I could choose to eat something that will actually nourish my body. For me, the two hardest things to let go of were Oreo cookies and Cokes.  The Oreos went about a year ago… after tasting cookies made from higher quality ingredients and realizing what is IN the Oreos, they were easy to let go. Cokes were harder.  Much harder.  Even though I knew how bad all the sugar was for me, and how it really was rotting my bones just like my mom told…

  • Preventing Illness – The Mighty Sambucus

Hold on to your hats. Are you ready for this? I want to introduce you to Sambucus.  This little berry packs a mighty punch.  A complete cure for the H1N1 flu strain was found within 2-3 days for 90% of the group given Sambucus.   The Journal of International Medical Research reported that 93% of the patients given Sambucus for influenza strains A & B were symptom-free within 2 days. How does this baby work?  It actually stops virus replication in its tracks. Sambucus has also been shown to have an immunoprotective effect when given to cancer or AIDS patients. Rather than wait for the flu or some other nasty…

  • Frugal Fridays – Eating Organic & Saving Money by Keeping it Simple!

Can I tell you a secret?  Our grocery bill has actually gone down by around $400 since we stopped eating processed foods.   We even added a family member during that time. I know it can be really difficult to make ends meet sometimes so I want to encourage you that you don’t have to give up (or stay away from!) natural and even organic foods because of the price tag. What’s the key? Simplicity For us, it’s been simplicity.  I no longer load up my grocery cart with packaged chips, cookies, poptarts, and pre-prepared dinners that don’t really nourish us anyway. I instead buy food as fresh as possible…
