I made yogurt!!
I’m so excited to have made yummy yogurt with all the good bacteria still intact! It’s definitely of smoothie-consistency but it happened to be super easy! I think I spent five minutes on it, tops. (I’m going to play with a more complicated method of making it that will hopefully make it thicker – I’ll let you know how it goes!) I hear that making yogurt from scratch works best if you have raw milk. I also bought a container of Dannon Natural yogurt from the store for this first round. For subsequent batches, I hear that I can reuse part of this batch and not have to do store-bought again.…

Checking out the Dairy
Davy and I talked recently about where milk came from. He was excited to learn that milk actually comes from a cow! So we decided to take a trip to the dairy where our raw milk came from, just to see the facility. It worked out perfectly that we were already out of milk from our co-op delivery, so I picked up a couple more gallons. After a leisurely drive to Bridgeport (it took about an hour from our house), we drove down a nice country road, over a cattle guard, and onto a country gravel road. Making the Switch
As you know, we’ve been transitioning our eating for 10 months now. It recently came to my attention, that, duh, there are other chemicals in our environment that I should probably pay attention to – like in my laundry detergent, dishwasher soap, hand soap, other cleaners, toothpaste, hand lotion, shampoo and conditioner, etc, etc. Whew. Time for another overhaul. A friend pointed out that when I use my typical brands, they have all sorts of junk in them! Great, more junk. The joys of co-ops
We have recently joined two co-ops and I LOVE them!! They are a great way to get organic food, for significantly less money than the grocery store. I’m part of a meat co-op that has Whole Foods quality meat at awesome prices. $4.59/lb for chicken breasts, 2.99/lb for ground turkey, and 3.99/lb for beef. The meat tastes so good too. We place our orders once a month by emailing the host, and then pick it up at her home in Colleyville, usually on a Friday afternoon. Breakfast has been a challenge at our house lately. I was shocked to learn that Lucky Charms and Special K have the same nutritional value. Equally shocking was to read articles about the extrusion process and the horrible effects cereal has on test rats. (Hmm… maybe I should feed cornflakes to the rat that refuses to get caught in our trap and likes to live in the back of my oven. I think he’s the size of my cat. Love at First Taste
I had my first taste of raw cow’s milk on Friday and I have fallen head over heels in love. Just in time for Valentine’s Day. 🙂 It’s super creamy and I felt really nourished after I drank it. I loved it so much I had 3 glasses on Friday night alone. We’ve already gone through an entire gallon. Raw milk is such a debated topic – after my weekend, I am definitely in the pro-raw milk camp! Healthy Poptarts
Healthy Poptarts. I did just use those two words together in a sentence. Davy and I tried them out today and we like them! My neighbors gave their approval too. (I think I might be a fun neighbor… we don’t have a loud dog and we like to share our baking. Don’t you want to come and live next door?) Anyway, the poptarts are simple – only 5 ingredients. I’ve been on the hunt for an easy, uncomplicated granola recipe. Yes, I wanted to emphasize that I wanted a really simple recipe! And I finally found one, courtesy of my mom’s old Better Homes & Gardens cookbook. It really doesn’t get any easier than this!
