Review: Hey Mama! Schoolhouse Planner 2016 – 2017
We haven’t fully wrapped up this homeschool year, and I’m already thinking and planning next year! I know I’m not alone! I’ve been busy evaluating what worked for us this year, what didn’t work, and what was just so-so, for each of my kiddos. I’ve already started browsing online and reading lots of curriculum reviews to try to decide what we want to modify for next year. Having a written planner is really helpful in keeping all of our homeschool work straight, especially as Super D and Sweetheart add more subjects and complexity to what they’re doing. The Old Schoolhouse just released their newest planner, Hey Mama! Print Schoolhouse Planner 2016 – 2017 and they kindly sent us a copy to check out. (They also offer a digital version, if you prefer to print your own.)
This is such a great planner! The Old Schoolhouse folks are known for being an authority on homeschooling, and so I expected their planner to be well thought out. You can tell that it was strategically designed to be very practical, helpful, and encouraging! The first page of the planner is a letter written to us as mamas, encouraging us that this homeschooling journey is SO worth it! This planner is packed full of Scriptures and Hey Mama! encouragement notes, written just for us. Some of the sweet notes made me tear up!
This 196 page planner is full-sized (9″ x 11″ x .5″) and bound with a wire spiral. The front and back covers are laminated and heavy duty.
This planner starts in July 2016 and runs through June 2017. For the calendar portions, it gives you yearly calendar dates for 2016 – 2018. Then you get blank monthly calendars in the big box format with plenty of room to write! The next two pages have a Hey Mama encouragement and a full page for notes for the month.
The monthly calendars are followed by weekly page layouts. They are completely blank so you can set them up to fit your homeschool. I’m going to write the subjects down the left hand column. Then I’ll list my kiddos across the top. In each box, I’ll write letters for the day of the week and then their assignment. This will allow the kids to see what their assignments are, and for me to check their progress at a glance! You can tell I’m just getting started for next year, but I wanted to give you a visual of what I meant!
Next, the planner includes Monthly, Semester, and Goal sheets that encourage you to set goals not only for academics, but also for personal talents, life skills, financial, spiritual, and relational. I appreciate that they include Life Skills! That doesn’t always occur to me – I just taught Super D how to load the dishwasher and that’s become his new job! So nice for him to be finally old enough to take over that chore!!
This planner also includes attendance charts for 5 kiddos, if you live in a state where you need to track attendance. Next are book logs for each kiddo, and curriculum planning sheets so we can remember which curriculums we are considering, who the vendor is, and the best price we’ve found so far!
The planner finishes with some bonus resources like creative writing prompts, presidents, branches of government, states and capitals, and info about creating academic transcripts. The Old Schoolhouse thought of it all!
